Or what’s left of it after my mishap the other day. I quized the mechanic, this is what happened.

When I was driving home, the belt broke, and because I didn’t stop immediately as I was finding a safe place to pull off the road, it wrapped around a post, and started to whip around, damaging everything in its vicinity. With the full list being the water pump, steering belt, alternator belt, anti-freeze, and the timing belt tensioner.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m actually surprised I didn’t hear anything while driving. I had music on, yes, but it sounds like a lot of noise would of been made. I’m just glad I got the car safely off the road, :).

Kinja'd!!!

Just another crazy story for my car.

Is it an interference engine?

could be worse, you are safe and that is all that matters.

Could have been a lot worse, from what I've heard. Several timing belt failures have caused entire engine failures, I think. Anyway, I hope it is back on the road soon. :)

Bad timing.

Fixed now?

so I take it those are non interference engines? I don’t imagine a rubber belt would have caused a bunch of damage. The t-belt tensioner seizing up could have actually caused this, and every thing else on that list probably should just be done while they are in there to do the belt as a matter of course. (tensioner included)

Yep, and I’m thankful that I was the only one in the car. It was a 2 hr wait for a truck.

Yep, I got it back Friday. It appears to be running good, but I'm keeping my eye on it to make sure I wasn't cheated at the dealership, :/.

I blew my engine once and I was about half a mile from home, but had to wait over an hour for a tow.

Yeah, it’s a non interference type. And I thought that too, and I asked if the timing belt damaged the others, and he said yes. I should of asked to see the other things now that I think about it...rats...

How many miles are on the powertrain? IIRC, recommended service interval for the DOHC engine is 105,000 miles. I replaced the timing belt in my SRT-4 along with the water pump, idler, and tensioner right around the 105K mark just for peace of mind. I hope your mechanic has small hands/arms unless they dropped the powertrain out to do the work.

it really doesn’t matter either way. If you are paying to get the work done you might as well have everything else replaced. The fact they told you these were damaged is a little shady, but they probably were just making sure you did the job correctly. I did double check and the WP is driven by the timing belt. Usually these are made to really only last the life of the belt. If you dont do that then you risk having to do the timing belt again. And if it seizes up then you are buying the belt twice. If the sepentine belt has just been done you can save that, but if it is off for the $20 I would just have it done

It just rolled 102k miles. I took it to a dealer, since I'm still learning where I can take my car to out here, and I figured a official dealer would be the best place.

Yep, but I already ran into a issue. I asked them to fix the squeaking near the rear axle, a few days later, I called them back for an update. They claimed the sound was from the front, sure, whatever, please fix it. When I took the pt for a test drive last Saturday, I heard the noise again from the rear.

I went back and passively told them this was suppose to be fixed. I’m gonna push on paying nothing or very little for the repair there, as I requested it, and it wasn’t addressed.

I'm essentially testing the waters there for quality and honesty. We might need a 2nd car, so I'm testing the dealership, :/.

Bummer, at least you can PT cruise again. Hope it goes well with the dealership. From experience it pays to remain calm and polite and give them appropriate opportunity to remedy the issue. After that go bat shit crazy if required.

I understand. I’m always paranoid when I have my car worked on. Thankfully I’ve become really good friends with my best friend’s brother who is pretty much one of the best shade tree mechanics I’ve met. So, I always ask him to do any repairs first.

How many miles are on your PT? I got scared after this and Googled my car’s engine. I've got a timing chain rather than a belt, thankfully.

A lot more clearance than my car...

I've been working on my belts and pump for almost 10 hours and only just got the pump off.

Those pics are of the front of the engine jacked up 4” and all of the front engine accessory drive already removed.

It’s tight until it’s undressed.
